On January 31, 2015, the Mauritanian community (MFAGC) met in a general assembly at 3668 Clifton
with the election of a new executive office for the association. Following very tense discussions,
procedures and processes to elect a new executive office were raised as issues.
The association appreciates the spirit of good tradition to allow everybody a time to speak out and
the productive discussion that took place. Here are few points that the executive want to update for
everyone.
1) On a vote of more than 51%, the General Assembly has approved a motion to postpone the
election of a new executive office to February 28, 2015
Some of the reasons given for this motion to postpone were:
Allow more of the Mauritanian community members to get involved,
Allow more time for campaign,
Allow more discussions to permit more diversities,
Allow the community rebuilding process to go forward before electing the executive office.
Clearly formulate to the community what executive functions are needed before making a
choice on the individuals to select.
Make sure candidates lists will be published a week before the election.
2) It is also important to remind everybody about some of the procedures to the election. As
approved by prior general assemblies in 2014, the association bylaws clearly specify that only
people with valid membership card can vote or be elected to the executive office.
3) The positions of the executive offices that need to be filled should be the following as approved
year ago by the general assembly:
President
President (Assistant)
Secretary General
Secretary General (Assistant)
Treasury Secretary
Audit
Cultural Officer
Cultural Officer (Assistant)
Organization & Logistics
Social Affairs
Social Affairs (Assistant).
It is advised to have the lists and its members published a week before the date of February 28, 2015 to
allow voters to know who they will be selecting on the Election Day.
